How you get paid.

Writing and publishing on Verhaler are free. When readers buy your book, there's one flat 20% fee, and Verhaler handles the payments, VAT, and invoice paperwork for you.

When readers buy your book

There's one platform fee on a book sale: the book-sale rate, a flat 20% for every writer, taken from the VAT-exclusive amount - you keep 80% of every sale after the sale's actual tax (worked examples per country are on the earnings page). The fee covers payment processing and Verhaler's merchant-of-record work: collecting the money and handling the VAT wherever it's owed. What lands in your Stripe balance is your royalty, paid out via Stripe Connect to your bank once it reaches the €3 minimum (3.00 in your payout currency).

If a Reader buys through one of our mobile apps, the app store that routed the purchase charges a service fee on that sale. That fee is deducted from the Writer's share, not from Verhaler's 20% commission, and the exact amount is shown on the affected sale in the Sales page. A Reader who buys on the website is unaffected.

Setting up payouts

To charge for an expansion, you connect a Stripe account once from Settings → Payouts. Stripe runs the setup: identity verification, tax forms, and bank linking. Until then you can publish free expansions without any setup at all.

Payouts currently reach most of Europe (the EEA), the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and Switzerland. If your country isn't among them you can still publish for free, you just can't charge for an expansion yet.

  • Once a month we draw up your royalty document for you: a monthly earnings statement (or a self-billed VAT invoice if you register a VAT id).
  • Books your readers already bought stay fully readable on the version they paid for, always.
  • Payout history and every royalty document live under Settings → Payouts.

Common questions

Nothing up front. Writing, publishing, and reading free expansions are free. Verhaler only earns when you do: a flat 20% fee on each sale of a paid expansion, taken from the VAT-exclusive amount - you keep the other 80%. A purchase routed by one of our mobile apps also carries that store's service fee, which is deducted from the Writer's share and not from Verhaler's commission. Worked examples are on the earnings page in the docs.
