Story Canvas
Once your story has more than a couple of branches, it stops fitting in your head. Story Canvas draws the whole shape: every chapter, every Trigger, and every fork that comes out of a Decision Template or a Dice Template. From the Story Canvas you can drop into the middle of the book and test the parts you need to test.
Where to find it
Story Canvas lives inside Reading Simulation: once a simulation is running, you'll find it behind Restart Story, at the top of the sidebar's Triggers tab. The Story Canvas lays out the whole story, from where your reader starts to every ending you've written.
What's on the Story Canvas
- Trigger cards are the backbone of the Story Canvas. Every Trigger you've placed in the book becomes a card, with a short summary of what it does when your reader reaches it. Chapters appear as banners above their first Trigger, so you can tell where you are in the book.
- Branch cards appear when a Trigger fires a decision, a dice roll, a combat, or a dialogue. Each possible outcome becomes its own card under the Trigger. The label shows the option your reader picked, the dice band they landed in, or how the fight ended.
- Reveal cards appear when a Trigger reveals a hidden chapter or section that has no Triggers of its own. The revealed piece gets its own card, so the path stays visible on the Story Canvas.
- Trade Screen cards appear when a Trigger opens a Trade Screen. The shop visit gets its own card.
Edges and edge styles
The lines between cards show why your reader moves from one card to the next.
- Dashed lines mean the reader reaches the next Trigger by reading on. It sits a few paragraphs further down, with no condition gating it.
- Solid lines mean something specific opened the path: a decision the reader picked, a dice band they landed in, or a chapter another Trigger revealed. These lines map your story's branching. They're drawn bold so you can trace a choice through to where it leads.
Play from here
The back half of a long book is hard to test. To reach it you normally replay the front half: pick the same options, roll the same dice, re-read chapters you already know. Story Canvas skips that.
Tip
Click a Trigger card or a reveal card and pick Play from here. Reading Simulation opens with the story as it would be if your reader had walked the path to that exact point.
- Everything along the path is applied, including the choices you made on the way in: hidden chapters and Glossary Items are revealed, story facts are set, and Triggers have fired. You land in the middle of the book, in the exact state you want to test.
